AMES

AMES is the largest provider of English language services in Victoria and has expanded to become a major supplier of specialist employment and training services in Melbourne and Sydney.

AMES, which operates as a statutory body of the Victorian Government, is Australia's largest provider of specialist language and employment services. The organisation also educates and services more than 30,000 people a year - more than half a million since it was founded in 1951.

A not-for-profit organisation, it reinvests its resources to increase the range and quality of its services.

AMES works with 23 organisations to deliver its services in education, employment, small business and community projects. Its almost 700 staff speak more than 55 languages. There are also more than 1700 volunteer tutors.

AMES' 2003 income was almost $60 million, and it has 20 branches in Melbourne and six in Sydney.

While the organisation's focus is on e-learning English, it is also developing other business applications, some at the request of foreign companies.
